Numerical and experimental methods for steep waves interacting with structures

Both numerical and experimental approaches have advantages and drawbacks when addressing wave-structure interaction problems. Those two families of methods are complementary to understand the underlying physics, and they are also useful one to the other as example when preparing an experiment thanks to numerical simulations or when validating a numerical development with a dedicated experiment. Outcomes can be maximized if proper care is given to both sides. Examples will be given (wave generation, response of a ship to steep waves and ditching of an helicopter in waves) using numerical developments and experiments performed at Ecole Centrale de Nantes, indicating present status and perspectives.
