Large-eddy simulations of wave-structure interaction

Date: 24.11.2020; UTC Time: 10:00 AM- 11:00 AM

In this talk, the method of large-eddy simulation (LES) is introduced and its unique capabilities in fluids engineering research is highlighted. In LES the time-dependent filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved for the hydrodynamics thereby resolving the large-scale turbulence and hence is a method suitable to predict wave-structure interactions in which viscous effects are important. Professor Stoesser will introduce and discuss applications-based research in which LES has been employed to better understand the near-field fluid dynamics of wave structure interaction. The data from LES are analysed to uncover and elucidate details of the flow physics. Applications include: (i) solitary wave traveling over a fixed submerged plate and (ii) solitary wave interacting with a vertical circular cylinder.
